Free Learning for Everyone – Khan Academy

YousefEducation, General, Internet, Life Leave a Comment

Last night I was looking through TED Talks, some of the older episodes,  and I fell upon something I didn’t know existed earlier! Free Education programs provided by the Khan Academy, its an online school basically which has a vast amount of subjects you can go through at your own pace covering different levels and educational backgrounds. It has everything from Basic Arithmetic to Computer programming and Economics. They basically believe in providing free education for everyone!

Here’s a video from Ted Talks 2011, where Salman Khan (not the Actor) , the founder khan academy talks about the whole idea and how it started  :

Unfortunately sometimes we miss things out in school or miss an important point and as my old math teacher used to say, learning is like building, if you don’t have a the proper foundations, your building will fall apart and its quite true, for me now as a parent i’m more than happy that my children will have an opportunity to learn from different resources and not just books, not just from their school and not just from us. Even for me as a parent Its good to go through this content as a refresh every once in a while so that when our children grow we still have the knowledge to be able to teach them.

Khan Academy’s mission is :

“A free world-class education for anyone anywhere.

Khan Academy is an organization on a mission. We’re a not-for-profit with the goal of changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education for anyone anywhere.

All of the site’s resources are available to anyone. It doesn’t matter if you are a student, teacher, home-schooler, principal, adult returning to the classroom after 20 years, or a friendly alien just trying to get a leg up in earthly biology. Khan Academy’s materials and resources are available to you completely free of charge.”

Some of the classes it provides are :

KhanAcademyLearning4 KhanAcademyLearning3 KhanAcademyLearning2

I love the idea and will try to go through some of the subjects to freshen up my knowledge on economics and other subjects, I urge you to go through it and tell your friends, family and children about it, especially those who are currently in school.

To Sign up you can easily sign in with your current google or facebook accounts at http://www.khanacademy.org and start learning by selecting the topic yo would like to learn.

Learn Programming with Team TreeHouse

YousefGeneral, Internet, Tutorials Leave a Comment

Once upon a time, I learned coding, syntax, how to write algorithms and different programming languages, including C++, java, python and Php/MySQL. I wasn’t really good at writing code but I was great at creating documentations, and manipulating already written code. Time has passed since uni, and now i’m trying to re-learn some basics so that I can create my own applications (i’m mainly looking to create educational programs for children, to learn numbers, colors and shapes), so I set out online to find a suitable source of learning. I was already a member in Lynda.com, but to work with them demanded a high amount of time and dedication, however I fell upon a site called teamtreehouse.com. Here’s a short introduction video :

Check out their website at www.teamtreehouse.com, they have different learning tracks that you can choose from depending on your learning goals, cost is around $25 per month, which Is what you would typically spend on a day out with friends. Whats mainly different about teamtreehouse are the interactive quizzes and exercises after a lesson which stick what you’ve learned through application! I’ll be trying the create an application for android track and let you know how it goes after I learn something!

The Beast – The 2014 Camaro SS

YousefCars, Chevrolet, Kuwait, Review 2 Comments

2 Weeks ago I had the chance to review the 2014 Camaro SS, true american muscle, with a european driving experience. Its powerful, a little loud (but conservative most of the time), the suspension is medium-soft (it uses an active suspension system  magnetic selective ride control which first debuted on the Cadillac XLR ages ago, Update:: Active Suspension is only available the manual trans SS – however the suspension was still quite good!), and the acceleration and handling were quite nice, the car would literally jump off the ground if you hit the gas too hard!

[shashin type=”photo” id=”1554,1558″ size=”large” columns=”1″ order=”user” position=”center”]

When you look at the SS the first thing that strikes you are the hood vents, which make the car look aggressive and like it came from a video game!

[shashin type=”photo” id=”1536,1540,1542″ size=”large” columns=”1″ order=”user” position=”center”]

The overall design is similar to the previous model except for a sharper front face and halo lights and more confined sportier lighting on the rear, paired with an interesting rear wing.

[shashin type=”photo” id=”1548,1555″ size=”large” columns=”1″ order=”user” position=”center”]

The Camaro SS is powered by a 6.2 L 6 Speed Automatic 400 HP V8, and is equipped with a Rear Reverse camera, StabiliTrak ESC System, and a Heads up Display.

[shashin type=”photo” id=”1572,1571,1570,1569,1567,1566″ size=”medium” columns=”2″ order=”user” position=”center” crop=”y”]

The interior boasts bucket leather seats, more technology then you would ever need, and a different layout of different items in the instrument cluster. The main console consists of the Speed and RPM, the other gauges are placed in front of the shift lever, which gives it a retro feel. For the HUD you can choose if you want the RPM with lateral G’s or Speed or range, flipping between songs in your ipod also displays the track information in the HUD display, you can really get used to using the HUD display, it was also movable via a button next to the center console which was pretty cool. The Audio was powered by the Mylink system and Boston Acoustics amp and subwoofer.  The rear seating area, well lets just say would only be suitable for small children, I felt it was too close (compared to a 2007 mustang GT I used to have, I used to be able to seat two adults semi comfortably in the back which is challenging with the Camaro).

PS: For the photographers out there, all the photos were taken using my Nikon D7000 with a Sigma 17-70mm Lens used a polarizer filter on a couple of occasions!

Renewing the Car Registration with Golden Sun – Kuwait

YousefCars, Kuwait, Life, Maintenance, Review, Service 6 Comments

GoldenSunInspection

Golden Sun Technical Inspection and MOI Approved Vehicle registration renewal center (image Courtesy of Moi.gov.kw)

Golden Sun is a garage located behind Safat Alghanim in AlRai, it used to be a technical car inspection company where you would take a car to be inspected before buying. 2 Years or 1.5 years ago they got the licence that allows them to do approved MOI car inspection and registration. Its a small garage/area but for me it’s usually less crowded and it means I can take my car for inspection after work!

The cost is around 19.5 KD for the Insurance, 10 KD for the office and a 5 KD stamp for the MOI. In total the amount you are paying extra is 10 KD which goes to the processing fees. But it a one stop shop, you park your car and then simply wait till the registration is complete. Unfortunately yesterday I was told my 30% heat shield window tint amounted to 65% in total, as my car windows already are pre-tinted and I had to remove it in order to get my registration. The nice thing was the inspection guy from the MOI explained it clearly, I removed it, he signed the document and voila, 10 minutes later I got the registration.

The whole process took about 45 mins to an hour, seating area is a little small but overall its an OK experience, and I would recommend going to them. With my FJ cruiser they didn’t tell me to remove my larger tires or my window tinting (which was legal), I only had to remove the front LED offroad light I had. So overall its a positive experience I would rate it at 3/5 (a larger seating area would be a lot preferable and I think 10 KD is overpriced for a glass of tea and air-conditioned place + they call out your name twice, payment process should be only one time instead of twice and this time one of the agents didn’t want to walk and asked me to go get the new registration from the upper floor – I didn’t realize it only after I left!), Lesson learned, always take your invoice from the tinting shop let them mention 30% on the invoice, if you get a ticket go to the shop and let them take it off and replace it with something lighter! I’ll be changing my wife’s tint to Lumar which has a 78% light admittance and one of the best heat shield percentages out there in the market. I’ll be writing a post in a couple of days regarding how to order your window tint online to save $$$.
