The Geek Within Me

DudeEducation, General, Technology 5 Comments

Ever since I was at school, I loved to carry every possible pen/pencil I would ever need, I’d used to have a large pencil case with all my favourite pens and pencils and would really only need to use 2 or 3.

Moving on to college I switched to having 1 pen/pencil combo pen which came with 3 ink colors and and automatic 0.5mm pencil, which I then also replaced with a large pencil case lol.

College was a different story since sometime you would need that extra pen/pencil especially when working on projects or your instructor allowing you to enter a double sided A4 handwritten cheat sheet where i’d use a 0.1 Uni Pin Fine line pen (like the pic below).

Now with a wife and 2 Kids, I still love going to book/stationary shops to see what kind of new pens that are available, it’s not like I need them, I use a computer at work and at home I have an android tablet (moto Xoom) and iPad and rarely need to write using a pen or pencil. I also used to draw (pencil drawings) which i have all sorts of pencils and tone ranges and sketch books.

What I think would’ve been cool if it was there when I was in College/School:

LiveScribe pens, Unfortunately I couldn’t really find a good justification for me to buy one of those and the nice notepads that come with it, as I won’t really be needing them for work or home, but would’ve been great for me for school or college. I used to write a lot, and sometimes when reviewing my notes i’d try to remember what the instructor said and couldn’t (especially in calculus lol). The ability to have a soft-copy of all your note would also save you, especially when your note goes missing before an exam, and you wouldn’t really need to type out your notes in a computer either.

I’m starting to think I need one hehehe.. What Do you think ?

Bikes from Kuwait, and around the Middle East gathered to join in the Kuwait Bike Show and competition that took place yesterday 27-Jan-2012. I paid them a visit and had a look around. I saw some of the most beautiful bikes ever. I really didn’t appreciate all the different type of Harleys available till I saw what I did. I made sure to take lots of photos so that you can have a look if you missed the event.  Make sure you click on “NEXT” (the one above the thumbnails) to have a look at the rest of the photos!

Can’t wait for the ICS update on the Motorola XOOM!

DudeGeneral, Technology 3 Comments

Its been a few days now that the ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) has been released to XOOM devices in the states. The UK, Europe and other regions will have to wait as well as the update to the 3G version which is still not released. I have the 3G version which is good as  is, but I’ve tried the ICS on the samsung nexus and I can tell you its anoteher story all together and will really change your preception and feel to Android devices. Its also more stable, has a faster browser and has some of the more important features built in such as a task manager. Check out the videos below for more information  :

The latest News from BlackBerry!

DudeEvents, General, Technology 3 Comments

RIM (Research In Motion) invited many kuwaiti Bloggers to attend a exclusive blogger’s event where they shared some of future news and updates. We were then taken through the new features and additions in the  BlackBerry OS 7.1 Software Update by Mr. Mohammed Al-Mefleh, Director of Product Management, Services and Platforms, RIM Middle East.

What’s new with BB OS 7.1 ?

  •  Blackberry Tag : A feature that allows users to simply Tap to transfer data between devices, Mr. Mohammed Also explained that they have distributed API’s to allow other handset developers to create applications that will use the tapping features and show’ed how in the future businesses will be able to benefit from that technology.

  • Wifi Hotspot: Mr. AlMefleh, also discussed the future capabilty of the software to provide a wifi hotspot option, which was somthing really desired by Blackberry Users for a long time!

  • FM Radio: Both BlackBerry Curve 9380 and 9360 will be able to tune in to enjoy FM radio on their handsets.
  • Support for BBM 6.1 in addition to supporting animated avators, a number of new emoticons and support to customize conversation bubbles in different colors.

BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 :

Yes, OS 2.0. for the same BB playbook that you have, Mr. AlMefleh discussed blackberry’s concern to maintain the value of products purchased by customers, and that was by ensuring that they maintained and updated the software options, and added a a number of features to the existing device, increasing its reliability, performance, usability and most importantly flexibility. This flexibility would be seen in the new unified inbox, multi-tasking within email, rich text emails and an inbox management tool as well as the main outline discussed in the presentation :

Supporting Android Applications:  The new OS 2.0’s AppWorld will  include an area set to download Android applications, similar to using an android device, or tablet, where you would go to the AppWorld look in the tab for andriod Apps, and start downloading immediately.

What we asked :

1. When will the OS 7.1 Become available ?

Depending on the acceptance and the differnt pre-launch factors involved we should be able to expect OS 7.1 around April 2012.

2. Is a 3G enabled Playbook in the Roadmap this year ?

We should expect a 3G version of the Playbook after the 2nd quarter of this year.

Thank you

In the end, we’d like to thank RIM for giving us this opportunity to sit and discuss future products and services with them, as well as to their transparency on future products especially with the information being fresh for blogger and not just a repetition of whats on the tech news sites.

Tefal Actifry : To Buy or Not To Buy ?

DudeFood 17 Comments

Its been a couple of days and i’m considering buying one of these fryers has any one tried the actifry? The only problem is that they advertise its perfect for making potato crisps but what else can i use it for ? ? I’m thinking of changing some of my diet, and if it works as advertised it should help me have more options for my meals. Another advantage is that i can make potato crisps easily for my son and don’t require any help + i can do them safely with him hanging around in the kitchen unlike the conventional frying pan method.  The price tag is what’s keeping me from getting it really, the small model costs around 71 KWD, whereas the larger family model costs around 96 KWD, i’m not 100% sure about the prices but they are in those range.

Has anyone tried it and is it worth it ? Or Do you suggest other alternatives ?

Update: Turns out they have this community site for recipes : www.tfalactifry.com , hmmm, its already looking yummy.
